Apparently this is what happens when I am just myself! Please read this amazing e-mail my recycle company manager sent out earlier today. I've already raised $55 because of it!
Dear Sunflower Customers,
I would like to tell you about one of our customers who stands out because of her focus on, and dedication to the environment.
When Emily Reno was in junior high school her parents bought her a year’s worth of recycling service for their household. When the year was up, so was the present. Ever since, she has paid for her family’s recycling out of her own pocket and that strikes me as remarkable. How many kids do something like that?
Emily’s greenness didn’t stop there. At Free State High School she was the president of the environmental club and now she’s a freshman at Johnson County Community College hoping to transfer to the Environmental Studies program at KU. She’s paying for all her schooling, too.
Recently I found out that Emily is a leader in the Lawrence chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby, an organization that I greatly admire for their efforts and their methods.
So why am I telling you this? Emily gets the big picture and is already a leader in working for a sustainable planet. This week she is paying her own way to an international conference of the Citizens Climate Lobby and is a little short on her fund-raising efforts. One thing I’ve learned in my business is that a little bit of money from a lot of sources can add up fast so I’m reaching out to my like-minded customers to help send Emily to Washington.
Below is a message from Emily explaining who she is and what she is doing:
Hello fellow community members,
My name is Emily Reno and I've been living in Lawrence, KS since I was four years old. I think that from a young age I was drawn to the natural world, being surrounded by a town of people who aren't afraid to ride their bikes, use public transportation, and support businesses such as The Mercantile and The Farmer's Market. I am currently a student at Johnson County Community College, hoping to transfer to The University of Kansas for Environmental Studies. Last year I became involved with a group called Citizens Climate Lobby, after one of their volunteers came to speak to my Environmental Science class at Free State High School. Our group is an all-volunteer, bi-partisan organization which advocated for carbon-fee-and-dividend legislation as one solution to the climate change issue. Since then, I have become ever more engaged with CCL, becoming one of Lawrence's co-leaders in November of 2013. This summer I have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to lobby on Capitol Hill, but the only way I will make it is if I raise the funds myself. I have about 60% currently, but need just a little more to get to my goal. Feel free to visit my blog,renotraveling.blogspot.com/
